  • Phosphorylcholine (ChoP/PC) is a small zwitterionic molecule composed of a phosphate group and choline. It serves as a precursor in glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism and is an intermediate in glycerophospholipid synthesis. Immunologically, ChoP/PC is significant as it is found in pneumococcal teichoic acids and contributes to the proinflammatory effects of platelet-activating factors (PAF). Additionally, ChoP/PC is present in some bacteria, apoptotic cells, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OxLDL), making it a trigger for immune responses. In interventional cardiology, ChoP/PC is used to coat drug-eluting stents, reducing the risk of coronary artery restenosis. Over 120,000 ChoP/PC-coated stents have been successfully implanted, demonstrating no long-term adverse effects compared to traditional bare metal stents.

  • Industrial and Medical Applications

Phosphorylcholine has several applications due to its biocompatibility and presence in biomolecules:

    1. Biomaterials and Coatings:

PC is used to coat medical devices to enhance biocompatibility and reduce adverse immune reactions. It helps in creating hydrophilic surfaces that resist protein adsorption and cell adhesion, which is valuable in blood-contacting devices.

    1. Drug Delivery Systems:

Its biocompatibility makes it useful in formulating liposomes and nanoparticles for drug delivery. PC can be used to modify drug molecules or carriers to improve their stability and distribution.

    1. Research and Diagnostic Tools:

Used in studies involving cell membranes and lipid interactions. It can be employed as a marker or probe in various biochemical assays.
