Terbinafine hydrochloride is a potent allylamine broad‑spectrum antifungal agent, available as tablets, creams or gels. It works by selectively inhibiting squalene epoxidase in fungal sterol biosynthesis, blocking ergosterol formation, which compromises the fungal cell membrane and leads to cell death. Topical formulations (e.g., 1 % cream or gel) are chiefly used to treat tinea of the hands, feet, body, groin, pityriasis versicolor and cutaneous Candida infections; they are applied twice daily for 2–6 weeks. The oral form (commonly 250 mg tablets) is indicated for onychomycosis or severe dermatophytoses, with nail‑infection regimens lasting 6–12 weeks. Terbinafine hydrochloride itself is a white to pale‑yellow crystalline powder, well absorbed orally (≈40 % bioavailability), and highly lipophilic, allowing accumulation in skin, hair and nails. Overall, it is prized for its rapid onset, shorter treatment courses and reliable efficacy, though one must monitor for possible local irritation or rare systemic adverse effects (e.g., taste disturbances, hepatic dysfunction). Liver function and other risk factors should be evaluated under physician guidance before initiating therapy.
